With all of the enticing cities in the world, it can be hard to pick a favourite. But according to TripAdvisor we’ve managed to do just that, and the result is pleasantly surprising for Brits.
The review website’s annual Travellers’ Choice Awards has revealed that London is officially the best-rated destination in the world for 2019. That’s right, not just in Europe, but the entire world.
TripAdvisor came to the conclusion using data based on reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and experiences in destinations worldwide over a 12-month period. They found that throughout it all, London consistently offered the best overall experiences for travellers.
The score is an improvement on last year’s round where the British capital placed second, meaning despite Brexit turmoil, London is still a desirable travel destination.
While the city has plenty to offer, it is no surprise that a certain royal wedding may have spiked the interest in tourists travelling to the UK. According to TripAdvisor, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in May 2018 was followed by a significant spike in bookings for London’s royal-focused experiences. Perhaps everyone is convinced they’ll find their own real-life prince like Meghan did?
Hayley Coleman, a Tripadvisor spokesperson, said: ‘The global fascination with Harry and Meghan clearly has a powerful effect as this is the first time since 2016 that London has topped the world rankings. With the couple’s new Royal baby due imminently, London may continue to reap the rewards of the Harry and Meghan effect into 2020.’
Whatever the reason, it’s great news. Especially as London very impressively beat popular neighbouring cities such as Paris, Rome and Barcelona to the number one spot – though the the French and Italian capitals followed very closely, taking the second and third place.
