Keeley Hawes will produce and star in this upcoming dark ITV crime drama

Keeley Hawes shot to international fame following her lead role in hit BBC drama, The Bodyguard, last year and there’s no denying that she’s been the reigning queen of TV ever since. And now, the actress has an exciting new project coming to our screens.

As reported by Deadline, Hawes has been confirmed to not only star in but produce an upcoming British crime drama for ITV written by Gwyneth Hughes, the creator of Our Girl and Vanity Fair.

Honour, will be a two-part series based on the real life story of a detective who brought five killers to justice following the famous case of Banaz Mahmod, the young Londoner murdered by her own family for falling in love with the wrong man.

Hawes will play Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Goode, who passionately dedicated time and energy to uncover the fate of the missing 20-year old girl.

Commenting on her new gig, Hawes said: ‘It is a privilege to be working on Honour as Buddy Club’s first ever project. In a time where honour killings are still rife, it is critical to shine a light on such an important subject. Banaz Mahmod’s story, and DCI Goode’s subsequent investigation, is certainly one that needs to be told and I am proud to be a part of it.’

The show’s writer Hughes, similarly added: ‘Banaz Mahmod met her brutish death on the orders of her own father and uncle, which I find profoundly unsettling. That this story is ultimately so uplifting is down to the sheer heroism and dedication of the police officers who hunted down her killers. Caroline Goode and her team felt real love for this girl they’d never met. I found their unusual warmth and humanity deeply moving.’

Meanwhile ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, who commissioned the series, said: ‘Gwyn’s scripts beautifully and sensitively tell the story of DCI Caroline Goode’s investigation into the tragic murder of Banaz Mahmod. I am proud to work with Liza and Hera Pictures, to bring this important story to screen on ITV.’

Honour will be directed by Richard Laxton and filming will kick off in September which means there is still a while before we can expect a release date. But we’ll certainly be keeping our eyes peeled.
