We’ve hit peak picnic season – in part thanks to the glorious weather, and in part because it’s one of the safest ways we can socialise with those outside of our immediate households right now. And the surge in outdoor gatherings is certainly reflected in our purchasing habits at one of the UK’s biggest retailers – yes, according to John Lewis & Partners, it’s hampers, blankets and coolers ahoy for the rest of the summer.
After reviewing the figures, John Lewis has found that sales of picnicware and barbecues are soaring as we all prepare to kick back and relax in the garden or local park with our nearest and dearest. Demand for picnicware at the department store are currently up 72 per centand hampers, cool bags and rugs up 106 per cent.
Once we’ve got the gear, we’re toasting to the sunshine with rosé and Pimm’s, with partner Waitrose reporting searches for Pimm’s on Waitrose.com are up 175 per cent, and rosé wine is predicted to have its biggest week ever at Waitrose with sales up 100 per cent compared to the same time last year.
Sunglasses and linen fashion are also seeing spikes as we prepare for the upcoming scorcher, with temperatures set to hit more than 30 degrees across the country. If you’re planning a picnic of epic proportions, here are the best bits to invest in for the rest of the season and beyond.
