With a beauty hall (both physical and virtual) stocking hundreds of brands, spanning affordable names to high-end luxury, John Lewis is one of the foremost authorities in the world of beauty on the high street. And its bestsellers for 2020 tell a fascinating story of how we faced one of the most turbulent years in recent memory, from the hair repair formula that sold by the bathtub to the gadgets we invested in as salons and spas closed their shutters.
Over the last 12 months, searches for multifunctional serums were up +168 per cent and products containing vitamin C + 248 per cent, as again, we tried to replicate the effect of professional facials from the comfort of our own four walls. Lip balms prospered (+122 per cent) while lipstick fell off the make-up radar, giving way to mascara (+58 per cent) and eyebrow make-up (+34 per cent).
And it wasn’t just our bodies we looked to beautify – it was the scent of our homes, with searches for candles up +182 per cent and reed diffusers up a rather incredible +1017 per cent.

Chanel’s iconic Soleil cream bronzer has been one of John Lewis’s biggest selling products in the make-up category in 2020, with enough sold to fill 17,000 2.55 bags.
