Autumn may only just have started but we have already been spoiled with some excellent TV offerings to get us through the dark, cold nights ahead. From instant Netflix hits like Criminal to BBC’s Dublin Murders, we’ve had more than enough on-screen drama to get your teeth stuck into. And now, there’s an exciting new addition to put on your to watch list – especially if you’re a Luther fan.
Neil Cross, the man behind Luther, is bringing us a brand new crime thriller based on his 2009 book, Burial. Titled Because The Night, the four-part series will be directed by Niall MacCormick who recently worked on BBC’s The Victim.
The new drama, which will focus on themes of chilling psychological suspense, love and redemption, will air on ITV and was first announced back in July, though we have been given small bites of information regarding the plot and the cast ever since.
Here’s everything we know about Because The Night so far…
Because The Night: The plot
As the official synopsis states, Because The Night follows protagonist Nathan as he attempts to escape the ghosts of his past – literally. Nathan is a well-meaning man who’s spent years trying to atone for a terrible secret from his past, but a decade into his new life and marriage he’s visited by Bob, a figure from his old life, who comes bearing some shocking news.
This then results in a ‘series of catastrophic decisions which cleverly drive a tense and compelling narrative of psychological suspense, dread, love and possible redemption.’
Commenting on his new series, Cross said: ‘I’m truly excited to be working with ITV to make Because the Night. ‘It’s one of my favourite stories: a tale of psychological suspense, of guilt and ghosts and murder. Oh, and love. Always love. Our job is to make viewers want to sleep with the lights on. We’re looking forward to it.’
Similarly, ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill said: ‘I’m delighted to be working with Neil Cross and Euston Films on Because the Night – a taught gripping contemporary thriller, which is both chilling and compelling. Neil’s adaptation of his original novel promises to be unmissable TV drama and I’m thrilled he’s agreed to do this for ITV.’
Because The Night: The cast
Years and Years actor Russell Tovey has been cast in the lead role as Nathan, while Bob will be played by Doctor Foster star Bertie Carvel.
Meanwhile Amrita Acharia from Game of Thrones will play Holly, Nathan’s wife. Other cast members will include Nina Toussaint White, who has been cast as a character named Jackie and Paul Bazely as a character named Graham.
‘Because the Night is going to challenge me as an actor more than I’ve ever been challenged before,’ said Russell Tovey of his new role. ‘As a web of lies, that he thought was dead and buried, comes back to haunt Nathan, he sinks deeper and deeper into the horror of the event that happened ten years ago. I cannot wait to start filming and join this amazing team and cast.’
