Making a lockdown celebration feel special is no mean feat. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary or engagement, the likelihood is that you won’t be able to have everyone there that you’d like to be and you’ll be spending the majority of it at home. But whether it’s for yourself or someone else, there are ways to make someone’s special day feel, well, special. Hint: it’s all in the decorations.
Whatever it is that needs celebrating, there’s no reason to let lockdown get in the way of marking the day in style. In fact, the limitations it poses can often force us to get even more creative. Enter, balloon arches.
You’ve likely seen these spectacular constructions across your social media plenty of times by now, and there’s a very good reason why. While they look incredibly complex, they’re actually pretty easy to construct, yet provide maximum wow factor – it’s the perfect low effort/high reward ratio.
Celebrities are in on the trend, too. Comedian Katherine Ryan installed not one but two balloon arches at home to celebrate her daughter Violet’s 11th birthday, while Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson also celebrated her lockdown birthday with a huge pink, mint green and gold balloon arch. Denise Van Outen also celebrated her daughter turning 21 with a huge indoor ballon arch installation.

As with any highly Instagrammable DIY trend, the internet is full of easy to follow how-to guides for constructing your own balloon arch at home. Blogger Meg McMillin has a great tutorial, as does Pretty Colorful Life.
How to make a balloon arch
- Attach the balloon tape (this isn’t sticky tape, but rather clear plastic tape with holes to push the balloon knots through) to where you want your balloon arch to be. A curtain rail, exposed beams, drainpipe or a purpose-built ready-made structure works best.
- Blow up your balloons to a variety of sizes.
- Attach them to the balloon tape. Use the double-sided tape to stick smaller balloons to larger ones to fill in the gaps.
- Add any other decorations you like such as fake flowers or palm fronds.
5 balloon arch kits to buy
Alternatively, there are plenty of pre-made kits also available, which take some of the hassle out of building your own at-home celebratory balloon arch as they come with all the necessary bits and pieces.
