Adele shows us how to wear this season’s coolest coat trend

Not only can Adele claim the song of the year with her heart-wrenching new single Easy On Me, she’s also nailed the coat trend of 2021 in her comeback music video, courtesy of a chic vinyl trench coat in a rich oxblood colour.

While the puffer coat might be our practical fall-back for muddy winter walks, the leather-look trench coat provides an altogether more polished option, the perfect finishing touch for our back-to-work wardrobes. Whether cinched at the waist over midi dresses and skirts, or worn open with wide-leg, tailored trousers like Adele styles her coat, it offers an appealing fashion refresher after months of loungewear and sensible layers.

Unfortunately, while you can copy Adele’s signature makeup look for just £26, you may struggle to get your hands on her trench coat; like the rest of her outfit for the music video, it was designed specifically for the singer by Lanvin’s creative director Bruno Sialelli.

Luckily, the high street has come through with a selection of statement trench coats to help you channel that Adele vibe, whether it’s Marks & Spencer’s faux leather version, available in two colours for £79, or ASOS’s oxblood number, which offers that show-stopping vinyl look for just £65 (it’s also available in the Curve range).

Adele’s whole outfit for the video is a masterclass in tonal dressing. Although it starts in black and white, once the video flicks to full colour it reveals a gorgeously autumnal palette of rich red roll-neck, maroon trousers and even matching nails, all offset with gold jewellery and a knockout blow-dry. We’ve seen plenty of tonal dressing involving variations on beige in recent seasons, but this feels like an altogether more wearable palette, and perfect as we head into winter.
