This clever hack for cleaning a wooden spoon is going viral

TikTok has introduced us to huge amount of life hacks in recent weeks. Last week one user showed us a simple hack to make supermarket flowers look more expensive, and who could forget the four-way tortilla wrap hack that totally transformed our WFH lunches?

And now there’s a genius – if not slightly unsettling – hack on how to properly clean your wooden spoons doing the rounds on social media.

The video from Bonnie McNamara, AKA Miss Clean With Me, has been viewed over 15 million times and has over 1.4 million likes from viewers going crazy for the straightforward hack.

Wood is porous meaning they’re more difficult to clean properly than metal surfaces, as food particles can become embedded in the wood. But in the clip, Bonnie soaks her wooden spoon in boiling water, before revealing all the food and dirt that comes away…

While many viewers love the hack, some were too concerned to try it on their own utensils.

‘I’m not doing this to my years old wooden spoons. I don’t wanna know. It boosts my immune system,’ said one. ‘I… I don’t want to think about my grandma’s 30+ year old spoons,’ commented another, while a fellow TikTok user prefers the ‘ignorance is bliss’ approach, saying: ’If you can’t see it then it’s not there :)’.

Many have also been joking that the embedded food is what gives their dishes flavour, with one saying: ‘Well, there goes the seasoning’.

Others have been quick to point out that leaving wooden utensils soaking in boiling water could damage the wood. ‘Don’t do this, it makes the wood split and splinter,’ one user commented. ‘You’re not supposed to soak wood?? That’s why it’s falling apart like that,’ said another.

If you’re going to try this hack at home, it should be noted that it’s probably not a good idea to put boiling water in this sort of glass – try a mug or Pyrex jug instead.
