How To: Bring happy hour home with a neon sign

This month, YOU’s Interiors Coordinator Charlotte Page (@stylingyourhome) proves that a neon sign isn’t just for the bright lights of Soho, let’s bring the happy hour home.

Neon lights have become a staple in many homes. They are versatile, unique and a great way of bringing personality into any room. Is there a space in your home that’s just calling out for a quirky statement light? There’s a multitude of ways to incorporate them into your home, let’s start with these three effective tips.

Customise

Many of us have mantra’s that we live by or certain words of encouragement to keep us motivated. It could be a saying that’s unique to your family or a famous quote from a film that you love? These are all great places to start when thinking about incorporating a neon sign into your home.

Expert in all things neon, Jeremy Cortial, co-founder of online store Yellowpop says, ‘Choose a word or phrase that holds meaningful value to you. Everyone has words that speak to you a little more than others. I have the “Serendipity” sign in my house as it does that for me. We see a lot of people buying signs of their favourite song lyrics or iconic movie quotes and the great thing about our Yellowpop custom app is that you can immediately visualise your design’.

Emily Murray of Pink House Living designed her own Neon sign Play, it’s even her own handwriting.

‘Trial the different options to suit your aesthetics and budget, font (whether that be a chic handwritten scrawl or a more futuristic geometric typography), size (entirely customisable to your space) and a spectrum of different colour options to choose from’.

Once you’ve customised to your heart’s content, the place you put it is equally as important. Find a space that will maximise its meaning. Something so personal deserves to be seen. Whether it’s when you first walk through the door or the moment you wake up, ensure the placement of your sign makes an impact in your home and can be enjoyed on a daily basis.

Elevate your Gallery Wall

Adding in a neon sign is a popular way to update, refresh and inject some fun into an existing gallery wall. It elevates the space and adds some variation to a cluster of picture frames.

Jeremy says, ‘You can go as little or as large as you like, this was really important for us when conceptualising the custom process as we wanted the neon to be able to fit seamlessly into your space. I love the idea of a neon phrase running along the top of a gallery wall, adding a welcome pop of colour and fun to your favourite selection, setting or complimenting the tone. We have a choice of both brighter and darker colours, (from a zesty lemon to a luxe midnight blue) depending on the vibe you’re going for’. The colour choice is important when mixing in a neon sign with your existing artwork or photographs, and with so many options to choose from, there’s something to suit every style.

An extra dose of fun

Let’s remember the origin of the neon sign. They were originally created for outdoor advertising and from there it became a commonplace for neon signage to be used in barbers, bars and pharmacies. I love the idea of bringing that kind of traditional usage into the home, places that are used for entertaining like your at-home ‘bar’ or a ‘welcome’ or ‘exit’ sign by the front door.

Jeremy says, ‘Having a neon in a social space within your home is a great way to add an extra dose of fun to the room (and a talking point for your guests!). Our ‘This Way’ sign welcomes guests into the home whilst our ‘Good Vibes Only’ sign injects some humour and light-hearted fun to an entertaining space. For the bedroom, we love the cloud or perhaps a custom ‘I woke up like this’ or ‘INSOMNIAC’ text for a quirky alternative idea… ‘Hustle’ for the office! I could go on, there really is a neon sign for every corner of the home’.
