There are certain celebrity scandals that will go down in history for shaking public consciousness and (re)starting important conversations – the Harvey Weinstein case being one of them. It feels like it was only a matter of time before someone made a film based on the former movie producer’s atrocities, and it’s release date has now been confirmed for 2022.
The film is called She Said and is based on the bestselling book She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite A Movement, according to Deadline. The storyline focuses on Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, the two New York Times journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein scandal and wrote the book.
Back in October 2017, Megan and Jodi reported a number of alleged sexual assaults against women by then-film producer Harvey Weinstein, some of which dated back over three decades. The article shook the entire world, detailing examples of how the Hollywood giant had been able to get away with his awful behaviour for so long. The details included accounts of money being paid to cover up sexual indiscretions, and first-person stories from actresses accusing Weinstein of non-consensual sexual acts.
The story sparked the ‘Me Too’ and ‘Times Up’ movements, which saw women all over the world sharing their stories of sexual harassment and assault. Since then, Weinstein has been accused by more than 80 women, including celebrities like Rose McGowan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Lupita Nyong’o.
In March 2020, the disgraced producer was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.
Who’s starring in She Said?
Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are set to play Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, respectively. As it’s still in the early days of production, no other actors have been disclosed yet.
She Said will be directed by Maria Schrader, who’s the woman behind hit Netflix series Unorthodox. The script is by Oscar-winner Rebecca Lenkiewicz and the film will be produced by Brad Pitt.
When’s it coming out?
The film is set to be released on 18 November 2022 in the US. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
