Sisters Alana, Danielle and Este – who make up the three-piece band HAIM – are no doubt the perfect candidates to hand pick their favourite items from independent makers on Etsy. Their Californian studio was a black canvas and inspirational space to start. ‘We wanted to create a space that captured each of our personal styles in a way that felt harmonious. Etsy is the perfect place for us to discover unique vintage and handmade items to bring our vision to life. We hope our Etsy Edit inspires others to get creative and mix-and-match pieces that excite them and reflect their personal style to design an inspiring space of their own.’

With a practiced understanding of flea markets, vintage fairs and thrift stores, the sisters’ vision was very much an aesthetic that rings true to themselves. ‘We wanted to surround ourselves with pieces that had a history and therefore had a story, hopefully these pieces will help us conjure some creativity! We’re not afraid to mix eras, I think if anything that’s what we love in design. We’re hoping to be able to use this space to write and demo the songs for our next recordings’.

Supporting small businesses is something HAIM is passionate about promoting, explaining: ‘We were excited to incorporate items from independent artists on Etsy because when you look at these items you get the feeling that someone truly cared about the creation of it, that someone took the time and put their heart and soul into it. That feeling is palpable with these pieces. There was a whole lot of originality and variety we saw while perusing Etsy, it was a breath of fresh air in a world that’s becoming increasingly homogenized’.

The combined love the sisters have is a style that reflects transversely, so collating the collection was something they certainly weren’t afraid of. ‘We have a pretty similar aesthetic so it wasn’t hard for us to agree on everything that we decided to add to the studio. Like we said before, we aren’t afraid to be eclectic and mix pieces from different eras. If anything we just wanted to incorporate items that felt like they had a history and a story. I think that’s what makes it feel like home, things have already been used by other people and thereby feel comfortable and lived in’.

Alana, Danielle and Este go on to say, ‘Since we aren’t afraid of eclecticism, we trusted that everything we chose would fit together. We picked these candles because we always like having items in our studio that set the mood. The red mid-century lamp is super sleek and beautiful. We’re very much inspired by Italian design. The two leather sling lounge chairs we fell in love because they looked super comfortable and were inviting – perfect for those long nights in the studio’.
