Princess Diana sported innumerable fashionable looks in her time, from her relaxed oversized sweatshirt and cycling shorts combos (a look that’s really come back around in 2021) to the many beautiful gowns she wore for public engagements.
The right accessory can make an outfit – this Diana knew, and she often went for timeless classics, such as her much-favoured Tod’s moccasins that she loved so much that she owned them in multiple colours.
As for handbags, one Gucci bag, in particular, caught Diana’s eye and she was often seen carrying it throughout the 1990s. First debuted by the Italian fashion house in 1991, the Gucci Diana bag shot to instant success the moment the Princess was first spotted with it on her arm.
Now, in 2021, the Gucci Diana bag has been reimagined and given a modern makeover – and it’s already been spotted on the arms of celebrities including Sienna Miller, Jodie Turner-Smith and Elle Fanning.
Still featuring the iconic bamboo top handle and boxy tote shape, it now comes in three different sizes with removable, neon leather belts around the handles, ‘a nod to the functional bands that once came with the original bag to maintain the shape of the handles’ reads the Gucci website.
The revamped Gucci Diana bag is available in a range of colours – including brown (most like Diana’s), black, white, emerald, pastel pink and light blue leather – and, as the interchangeable leather straps also come in neon yellow, orange and pink (and with the option to have initials and star symbols embossed on the inside of the belt), the new and improved Diana Bag is open to great personalisation.
This is not the first time Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele has delved into the brand’s rich archives and reimagined an archive bag – just last year he gave the Jackie bag (named as such after it became a clear favourite of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis) a makeover for AW20.
