The new Grand Designs collection at DFS is sustainable, stylish and nails the biggest colour trend of 2021

DFS has teamed up with the BAFTA-winning Channel 4 programme Grand Designs to create a collection of sofas that are as sustainable as they are stylish. What’s more, each of the designs comes in several colours and fabrics that speak to the biggest colour trend of 2021; neutrals.

Grand Designs Padstowe Accent Chairs in Natural Chenille, £649 each, available exclusively at DFS // Iscar Rug in Smoke, £139, DFS

Moving away from white and stark grey, the new way to go neutral is to mix soft greys with warm shades of putty and cream for a look that is calm and collected. Expect to see warm cocooning shades of soft putty, oatmeal and cream popping up across walls, upholstery and accessories in 2021 as well as in DFS’ new Grand Designs collection.

Choose from the likes of mink and light grey for a sofa that lends itself to rustic and contemporary settings and also provide a backdrop on which to introduce accent colours through artwork, or architectural details such as skirting boards or a doorframe.

Grand Designs Farnham Right Hand Facing Grand Chaise Sofa in Light Grey Weave, £2,199 // Grand Designs Abstract Scatter Cushion in Off White (far right), £39 // Grand Designs Plain Velvet Scatter Cushion in Light Grey (far left), £39 // Grand Designs Padstowe Accent Chair in Natural Chenille, £649, all available exclusively at DFS

As for the designs in the Grand Designs collection at DFS, there are four ranges to choose from: Kent, Edinburgh, Tenby and Farnham, as well as a stylish accent chair dubbed the Padstowe. Each features clean, contemporary lines with a luxuriously deep seat for maximum comfort – and space for scatter cushions, of course.

And that’s the real key when it comes to designing a neutral scheme, layering similar shades together and working with textures to add interest and depth. The addition of scatter cushions or a textured rug really can make all the difference.

The collection also has sustainability at its heart and is aiming to tackle throwaway culture and growing landfills by using recycled polyester yarns in its fabrics and 100 per cent recycled polyfibres from plastic bottles in the scatter cushions and back cushions. Meanwhile, each seat cushion’s fibre filling is made using 50 per cent recycled plastic (that’s approximately 200 recycled plastic bottles in each one).
