Girls’ holidays are actually good for your health, according to science

Holidays are great, we can all agree on that. But one thing is for sure, there is no holiday greater than one with your girls. No matter your age, there is something special about sharing memories abroad with your favourite group of women, be it a weekend city break or a week of sun, sea and sangria.

However, holidays like this are not only good fun – they are crucial to our health, according to new science.

Research from social-personality psychologist, Dr William Chopik, has suggested that girls’ holidays are imperative for our health as evidence has shown that they boost our overall happiness levels.

Published in Personal Relationships, Dr Chopik’s research project revealed that holidays with our best girlfriends have a positive impact on our health as he pointed out that ‘friendships are a way to derive all the benefits of being in a relationship with someone without the enormity of it.’]

Speaking to Well+Good, he explained: ‘Friendships are really important for people’s happiness. These are relationships of choice. You choose to hang out together because you enjoy each other’s company.’

He then went onto explain that female friendships and face to face interaction are particularly good for this, saying: ‘You can sit down, look them in the eye, have a true back-and-forth, and read each other’s body language.

‘They can see you and your facial expressions. You’re emotionally responding to things, and you can pick up on their emotions. You don’t always get that through a phone call.’

One thing’s for sure: it’s time to start planning your next girls trip. Luckily, Black Friday sales are around the corner and Secret Escapes will be offering holidays for 70 per cent less. Let the group chat know, because a budget break is definitely on the cards for 2020!
