There’s a live nationwide Friends quiz tonight raising money for the NHS

So, no one told us life was gonna be this way… but here we are, nearing the end of the first week of the UK’s new social isolation rules, which involve staying at home as much as possible and only leaving the house for essentials and one daily form of exercise, aka our new normal.

In times like this, there’s only one group of people who could keep us going and that’s those loveable New Yorkers we like to call Friends. But if streaming the hit 90s show back to back throughout the day isn’t enough, you’re in luck as tonight there’s going to be a nationwide virtual online Friends-themed quiz.

Being the first Friday night under lockdown with not a restaurant, bar or pub to go to, there’s not a lot else we can do other than hunker down on the sofa and get involved in some good old fashioned quizzing on all things Monica, Ross, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey and Rachel.

The brain child of the founder of an events hosting company, Laura Jones, the quiz, which will be entirely based on the iconic US sitcom, has already attracted interest from 175,000 people. As well as providing entertainment for Briton’s Friday nights everywhere, the quiz is also raising money for NHS Charities Together, as your ‘entry fee’ is a suggested £2 donation to the charity. With nearly £18,000 already donated (and that number is expected to grow throughout the day), it’s safe to say that Laura is doing more than her bit to help during the coronavirus crisis.

On the Facebook event page, Laura explains: ‘Since coming up with the idea of the F.R.I.E.N.D.S virtual quiz, things have snowballed somewhat! I thought there would only be a couple of hundred people taking part, we currently stand at 144 THOUSAND people interested in this quiz. This is fantastic but overwhelming. For a little company like mine to create such an audience is incredible and just shows how much we all need a night like this in such difficult circumstances.’

The quiz creator continued: ‘As the number interested has increased so greatly, it seems an ideal opportunity to give something back. As I simply cannot crown a winner and provide a prize with this many entries, here is my suggestion… as entry to this quiz, I ask that you donate £2 (£2 is the minimum donation amount on JustGiving) and all proceeds will be donated to the NHS to help in this difficult time.’

To take part in the Friends quiz, simply ‘like’ Laura’s business page on Facebook and donate £2 via JustGiving (these two things must be done 5pm today) and then tune into either the Facebook Live or Youtube stream at 7.30pm tonight with your pen and paper at the ready. ‘There will be 80 questions, in 8 rounds of 10, giving the answers out after each round. The whole thing should take approx. 1.5 hours.’

If you’re missing your girls night out tonight, why not suggest you get together on FaceTime, WhatsApp video call, Zoom or Houseparty and see who out your friendship circle will be crowned champion of Friends knowledge. Could we be any more excited?
