The top fashion print trends for 2022

It’s the season of the print! The sun is shining, we have busy social calendars, and we need to inject some oomph into our wardrobe. We want our outfits to scream summertime, and a good print in the right colours is a fool proof solution.

When it comes to print trends, it’s a cyclical affair. Yes, you can expect to see the same prints every year, however the excitement comes from the interpretation. Prints like stripes, polka dots, and florals are always going to be in fashion, but presenting them in a new style gives them a fresh lease of life and does the same to our wardrobe.

Below are our favourites of the season. Some are classics, some have had a revamp and some are new for the season, so whatever you want your outfit to say, there’s a print for you.

The hottest print trends this season

70s GEOMETRIC

The 70s are back in a big way. Shag haircuts, platform shoes and crochet are already topping the fashion charts, but if these are all a bit too extreme for you look to the 70s-inspired geometric print to get your fix. Tessellated and colourful, the print can be big and bold or small and discreet, but either way interesting enough to be a focal point of an outfit.

ANIMAL PRINT

They say leopard is a neutral, and we’re inclined to agree. So this season we’re drawn to the colourful twists on the classic. The H&M trousers and Whistles skirt are great to pair with plain items, allowing the printed piece to do all the talking. Brave and clash with a contrasting print, or work in some tonal shades. But if you’re a fan of the OG then neutral animal prints are going minimal this season. Spaced out, uncomplicated and stripped back versions of the print appear chicer and more refined.

CHECKERBOARD

Yes this is the check you’ve been seeing everywhere. It reared its head in AW21 in monochrome and neutral colour blocks, but now the sun is out the colour combos are endless. It’s big and bold and beautiful, and not a print to be played down.

COLOUR BLOCK STRIPES

We can all expect stripes to be a trend in some shape or form, and the classic nautical, monochrome and poplin shirt styles aren’t going anywhere. But if you’re looking for something new, keep an eye out for colour-blocked stripes. The blocking can be at a minimum two bold colours together, or take it to the max with the whole rainbow.

FLORAL SILHOUETTE

Florals are another old faithful, but ditsy florals are starting to feel a bit dated. The floral silhouette print strips things back, highlighting the shapes and symmetry of florals, giving them more of a geometric feel.

PAISLEY

Paisley’s versatility is on display this season. We love the classic print in rich earthy tones, but designers and high street brands have been experimenting with colour, bringing the print out of the neutral zone and into a more joyful space. We love to see it.

POLKA DOTS

‘How much can you do with a dot’ we hear you say? Well granted, not much, but an outfit of dots on the other hand is a print playground. Go full length in a large spotted print, or mix big dots below with small dots up top, or play around with dotted accessories. Look past the black-and-white of it all and add some coloured dots into the mix too.

SWIRL

The newbie of the group, the swirl print is dominating social media. Psychedelic in style and often found in pastel shades, this print is a maximalist’s dream. Adopted by small indie brands like House of Sunny and Jaded London initially, the high street soon caught on and before we knew it the swirls were everywhere. Seen on everything from lounge sets and suits to handbags and swimwear, we’re embracing the newcomer and are excited to see what it does next.

TIE-DYE

Gone are the days of wrapping elastic bands around a t-shirt and dying it in your bathtub. Tie-dye came back hardcore at the beginning of lockdown (we needed some joy, and it delivered) and has gone through a few updates since then, but it has all been worth it. Tie-dye is now a very valid, grown-up print that can even be elegant at times. Who knew?
