When it comes to what we wear in bed, all of us have our preferred way of sleeping. Whether that’s wearing a t-shirt and little shorts, full-length PJs, or even nothing at all, it’s all down to preference. But a recent TikTok video has revealed that no matter what we wear on our bodies, we may want to keep our feet snuggly warm with socks under the covers.
Surprisingly, Doctor Jess Andrade, who posts on TikTok using the handle @doctorjesss, explained that those who wear socks to bed actually tend to fall asleep faster. ‘So let’s talk about people that wear socks to bed,’ she began.
‘Wearing socks makes the feet warm and this opens up the blood vessels that cools the body down,’ she added. ‘The body being cool tells the brain that it’s time for bed so actually people that wear socks tend to fall asleep faster.’
Her video has clearly piqued our interest, given that it has been liked an incredible 2.3 million likes, and shared over 180,000 times.
And Doctor Jess’ suggestion is actually backed up by scientific research, for those who doubt its reliability. A 2006 study reported that ‘in adults, sleep-onset was accelerated by warm and neutral bed socks after lights-off and correlated to the increase in foot temperature.’
I wear socks to bed so don’t come at me im not weird
The National Sleep Foundation in the US also recommends bed socks as a form of helping with sleep, as they can especially help those who have trouble falling asleep in the first place.
But if the thought of wearing socks in bed gives you the ick, it’s not your only option. In fact, you can achieve the same effects through ‘foot temperature manipulations,’ according to the 2006 study, which include ‘footbaths before sleep onset.’ You could even just take a regular bath right before bed; as long as your feet are heating up, that’s the idea.
Now if this doesn’t give us an excuse to go shopping for a luxe pair of cashmere bed socks, we’re not sure what does!
