This simple trick will tell you whether your new jeans are the right fit

The quest for the best fitting jeans is one that most women can relate to.

When it comes to finding the perfect pair, it’s all too common to find yourself squeezing into a size too small in the hope that they’ll stretch, or worse, going too big and find them falling down from the first wear.

One woman who doesn’t have this problem, however, is designer Donna Ida, better known as the ‘jean queen’. Since opening the doors of her first boutique in Chelsea in 2006, she’s been bringing proper premium denim to the masses – and her changing room trick will help you find your ideal fit in seconds.

‘When you’re trying on jeans, a quick way to check if they’re the right size is to see how much room you have at the back of your waistband,’ she explains. ‘If you can fit a couple of fingers down the back, they’re the right size, a whole hand and you need to size down. It is quite common to have to really wriggle into your jeans, so kick into them!’

‘Go as tight as possible to make sure there is a little room for them to give after a few wears. White jeans are the exception to this rule, as you will wash them every time you wear them to keep them fresh and so buy them at exactly the right size.’

Once you’ve found the jeans of your dreams, your priority should be preserving them – and Donna’s got the solution to that problem too.

‘When washing your jeans, make sure you wash them on cold if you can (30 degrees maximum) and turn them inside out to preserve the hardware.’ she advises. ‘Any hotter than this and you can start to damage the elastane. Dry them naturally if you can as radiators and tumble dryers can cause them to distort.’

5 of the hottest denim trends for SS18

Donna shares her top jean tips for the current season, from floral details to bright white…

90s jeans

‘High waisted traditional denim is a blogger favourite because it gives a cool, nonchalant look which can be cinched in with a designer belt. Look to our Boy Dazzler in mid to light blue denim with a worn-in look.’

White jeans

‘The hottest denim look for SS18 is white jeans – and they can work for everyone. Just look out for the right shape, rise and fabric when you are buying them. For a fresh look, try Margot the Culotte and wear with trainers. This high-rise style comes in a soft white shade and has a 22 inch leg opening to make it the perfect jean for staying cool on the go.’

Customised hems

‘A quick way to update your denim wardrobe is to look for jeans with an unfinished or raw hem like the best-selling super soft and stretchy Sidney Jeans which are a cute cropped straight leg. You can create this look on any pair of jeans – simply unpick the hem to release it and embrace the awkward fashion length.’

The new skinny

‘Skinnies are a wardrobe staple and they are here to stay, but there are many variations on this classic look. Try a style like Kitty Kat the Mini Boot for an updated look which kicks out slightly at the leg to wear with a Gucci loafer.’

‘For spring summer we have added oversized stars to our Lila Mini Boot Jeans, lace up detail on the ankle to our Lois Mini Boot Jeans and floral embroidery to our Kitty Kat shape. Team with a simple t-shirt for a cool, clean and simple look, or add detail on detail with a printed blouse.’
