The biggest accessory story of the season? Pastries, apparently. Yes, croissant bags are the biggest news in the world of arm candy for spring 2020, and frankly, we’re hungry already.
The delicious-looking trend has been sparked by the popularity of designer styles like the Bottega Veneta shoulder pouch – the current cult ‘it’ bag amongst those in the know – and the sold-out-absolutely-everywhere Nanuska Anja vegan leather design.
The voluminous bags are crafted from buttery (pun intended) soft leather and have a gathered, pillowy pouch design that gives them their distinctive laminated look.
The experts at Who What Wear say that they expect plenty of croissant sightings at the upcoming A/W 2020 fashion weeks this February – and their predictions almost always come true.
With its neutral colour and wear-anywhere casual crescent shape, the croissant bag trend isn’t too tricky to style – add it to a tonal palette of cappuccinos browns (well, the two are natural partners), or use it to add a chic twist to a clean white shirt.
Instead, the main barrier to entry is the cost – with the £345 Nanuska design showing no sign of being restocked, and the Bottega Veneta piece retailing for upwards of £2,000, the look appeared to be pretty inaccessible to us mere mortals at first glance.
That was, however, until we spotted Mango’s brilliant dupe, the Pleated Volume Bag, which just arrived on the Spanish retailer’s website with a £19.99 price tag.
While it doesn’t boast quite the same hooped handle as the big brand names, it does have a similarly ruched, half-moon effect, and still conjures up images of getting crumbs all over the pages of the Sunday paper in our minds.
