A classic loafer never goes out of style, but this season the fail-safe shoe style has undergone a chunky revamp.
Thanks to a certain Prada launching a pair of chunky loafers as part of its AW21 collection (and the fact that pandemic dressing made heels lose their style status slightly), it’s now the shoe everyone is wearing. The fashion set went mad for Prada’s shoes the last couple years and they can still be spotted all over Instagram.
But with a £1,011 price tag, the rest of us mere mortals can only dream of owning such a pair – LIKEtoKNOW.it reported a 2000 per cent increase in searches from consumers looking for loafers on the app in 2020.
Luckily, the high street has swiftly picked up on this trend and there are dozens of thick-soled loafers to choose from at much more purse-friendly price points.
So what are we looking for? Ideally you want a slip-on shoe (no laces here – except for ZARA’s lace-up option below which just about makes the cut as a loafer) in leather or faux leather with a thick rubber sole and a slight heel – the chunkier the better. Basically, if it looks like the type of shoe you wore to school back in the day, you’re on the right track.
We’ve found 16 pairs of loafers at various price points to kick-start your search.
