When you look at a picture of Meghan Markle, you probably see an outfit that’s totally flawless. But eagle-eyed royal watchers have spotted that there’s one surprising choice that the Duchess of Sussex often makes when it comes to her footwear – wearing shoes that are a size too big.
Speaking to The Sun, fashion editor Harriet Davey explained that this tip isn’t unique to Meghan – it’s a trick that’s used across the board in the world of the rich and famous, for a very relatable reason.
‘Celebs often go a size up, or even two, in the shoe department when they’re at an event or on the red carpet and it’s for one reason we can all relate to – to avoid blisters,’ she told the paper.
‘There’s nothing worse than uncomfortable shoes (we’ve all been there on a night out) and when celebs like Meghan are wearing heels for a long period of time their feet can often swell up. The swelling can cause blisters and in the long run bunions—like long-time heel fan Victoria Beckham has been rumored to suffer with.’
It makes sense that stars who have to stand at public appearances or red carpet events for hours in killer heels would need all of the respite they can get – and Meghan’s certainly not alone.
Over the years, stars including Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Stewart and Kristen Bell have all been snapped wearing shoes that appear to be sized up.
But how do they manage to walk with such poise, whilst wearing shoes that are set to slip at any moment?
According to Brightside, celebrity stylists often add a silicone pad to the pumps to avoid any slipping. ‘This simple trick ensures that the shoe fits snugly but stays on the foot, does not restrict blood circulation, and stops feet from swelling,’ they say.
‘Double-sided tape is another secret tool used by celebrities. It also helps too-big shoes stay on your feet all night long.’
