Cast members have teased more details about the Bridgerton prequel

With 82 million streams, Bridgerton became Netflix’s biggest series of all time, so it comes as no surprise that the team behind the show (led by Shonda Rhimes) is already working on further seasons. Excitingly, this includes a Bridgerton prequel, which that will tell the story of Queen Charlotte (below centre).

Known for her no holds barred approach to giving feedback and decadently OTT costumes, Queen Charlotte (played brilliantly by Golda Rosheuvel) has quickly become a fan favourite, so we can’t wait to find out more of her backstory, and what the series has in store for us.

The news was first announced in a Tweet by Netflix, which read: ‘All Hail The Queen! Thrilled to announce we’re expanding the Bridgerton universe with a limited series that will tell Queen Charlotte’s origin story.’

Who will star in the Bridgerton prequel?

The role of the young Queen Charlotte is being played by India Amarteifio (below). She is currently best known for playing Sophie, the daughter of Thandiwe Newton’s Roz Huntley, in Line of Duty’s fourth season.

As well as Charlotte’s story, the series will also ‘feature young Violet Bridgerton and young Lady Danbury,’ who will be played by Ruth Gemmell, and Adjoa Andoh respectively.

What is the plot of the Bridgerton prequel?

At a recent press conference, Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury (below) said: ‘We’re hoping it answers that delicious question that we all have when you meet someone, you kind of think: “Who are they?” and “How did they get to be this?”‘.

She also told TV Line: ‘These courts are not cuddly, friendly places. They’re rabid, and you have to survive. Lady Danbury has gotten to a position of comfort and safety and status because she learned to play the game, and you will see how.’

Speaking about the series, Netflix head of global TV Bela Bajaria said: ‘Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton.’

Bajaria continued: ’Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.’

When will the Bridgerton prequel be released?

It’s so far unclear when exactly we can expect the prequel episodes, but we do know that Bridgerton has also already been renewed for a third and fourth season, so there’s plenty to keep us amused.
