When we think about the best beaches in the world, our minds often wonder off to the tropical corners of the world – from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean. However, it turns out we should actually be looking a lot closer to home.
According to this year’s TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards, Dorset’s Bournemouth Beach has been named as one of the best in the world. Yes, really.
The popular British beach was not only crowned the best beach in the UK at the award ceremony, but it was also named as the sixth best beach in Europe and the twentieth best beach in the world by the travel review site. Impressive, right?
This is the second year the sandy destination has topped the list of UK beaches and it isn’t hard to see why. Anyone who has visited it will agree that it is so beautiful and golden that it could easily be mistaken for a Californian beach, or even sunny Spain – but of course, that’s only when the weather is good.
Each year, the winners of the Traveller’s Choice Awards are carefully determined based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches on TripAdvisor over the past 12 months.
In the UK, Bournemouth beach was closely followed by Luskentyre on Scotland’s Isle of Harris which was named the second best beach in Britain, while St. Brelade’s Bay Beach in Jersey came in at third place.
As for the European chart, Spain’s La Concha Beach took the number one spot, and it was followed by the deep azure waters of Spiaggia dei Conigli in Sicily and Falesia Beach in Portugal. Meanwhile the title of best beach in the world was given to Baia do Sancho in Brazil with Caribbean neighbours, Varadero Beach in Cuba and Eagle Beach in Aruba following in second and third place.
We’ve officially added them all to our travel bucket list.
