After almost a year and a half of mask-wearing, many of us have given up wearing lipstick altogether in order to avoid the tell-tale smudged or chapped lips that have become synonymous with wearing a face mask. It makes sense then, that as we prepare to ease out of lockdown and face masks become no longer mandatory as of 19 July, Boots has reported that interest in lipstick has soared as a result.
According to No7 Beauty Company, sales of lipstick are up 61 per cent in the last three months, compared with January to March. Meanwhile, boots.com has reported an increase in searches of ‘lipstick’ by 731 per cent compared with the same time last year.
‘We are expecting to see a lipstick and lip gloss boom,’ says Grace Vernon, Global Trend Lead No7 Beauty Company. ‘Women are relishing the fact that they can finally coat their lips without worrying it has smudged all over their face and onto the lining of their mask.’
While some simply want to rediscover the joy and mood-boosting power of lipstick, it seems others want to embrace the bolder side of colour. Google has reported red lipstick has been searched 60 per cent more than nude lipstick in the UK over the past 90 days and searches for orange-red lipstick are up 250 per cent year on year in the UK. Other lipstick trends surfacing include the return of Nineties nude-brown lipsticks, balmy hybrids infused with skincare ingredients and bold lip stains.
Though lipstick as a category has taken a firm back seat over the last year, there’s no shortage of new formulas to choose from if you are looking for a new shade or formula to try this summer.
For instance, Jen Atkin launched an exciting collab with makeup giant e.l.f cosmetics with three perfectly formulated Xxtra Lip Duos that enhance and define your lips. Glossier launched its much-anticipated Ultralip addressing the need for a glossy lip tint with all the hydrating moisture of a balm.
And, to celebrate National Lipstick Day, Boots are offering up to 50 per cent off across selected lip products on 29 July. The promotion is online-only, however, so head to boots.com here to shop the offer.
