HBO’s powerful mystery drama Big Little Lies is back for another exciting season this summer after leaving viewers taken aback last year with its shocking final plot twist.
The dark show centers around a group of five mothers living in Monterey, California who have ongoing dysfunctions in their lives, and tackles tough and important topics such as parenting, female solidarity and domestic abuse – especially in the wake of the #MeToo era.
The end of season one sees Bonnie (played by Zoë Kravitz), courageously pushing Celeste’s (played by Nicole Kidman) abusive husband, Perry (played by Alexander Skarsgård) to his death. The friends agree to tell the police that he fell after an argument, but will this secret be kept under wraps in the second season?
Judging by the latest news, we’re not so sure, as the show’s creator David E. Kelley just confirmed that it will in fact be the closing chapter of the drama. *sobs*
Speaking to Variety, David admitted that the show was created with a ‘two-and-done’ mindset and that this hasn’t changed. However, he did add: ‘I suppose there’s always a chance but that’s not the plan… We wrote this season as if this were the end.’
So, what can we expect to see in Season 2?
When will Big Little Lies season 2 air?
After receiving 16 Emmy nominations and winning eight, it would be a no brainer that the series, based on a book by a novel with the same name, would be commissioned for another run.
Fans will get their fix of the gripping new episode on Monday 10 June as it premieres in the early morning on Sky Atlantic at 2am. A prime-time repeat on the same evening at 9pm.
Similar to season one, the latest instalment will only be seven episodes.
What’s Big Little Lies season 2 going be about?
Viewers can expect more dark and twisted turns in the next season as the drama will continue to explore the strength of the character’s friendships, the delicacy of marriage and the cruel ferocity of sound parenting.
Big Little Lies Season 2 will see various characters dealing with Perry’s death and the anticipation of going past a life-altering event. Of course: things could get messy – as the trailer shows…
Will the original cast be back?
Yes, the dynamic leading cast from season one, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, Adam Scott, James Tupper, Jeffrey Nordling, and Iain Armitage will be reoccurring.
During a recent panel discussion, Nicole Kidman gave away a pretty major spoiler when she also revealed that despite his character Perry’s demise in season 1, Alexander Skarsgård was also back for the second run.
‘He was the most incredible acting partner, and then he came back for season 2…’ she began, before co-star Reese, realising the path the conversation headed down, laughingly exclaimed: ‘Stop talking!’
‘He has a little bit of a part in the sense of…the basis of…okay, I’ll be quiet. He didn’t abandon us,’ Nicole finished. ‘We’ll put it that way.’
What is Meryl Streep doing?
The amazing award-winning Meryl Streep will grace this season, joining the main cast as late Perry’s mother, Mary Louise Wright.
