When you’re shopping for a new shampoo, a beautiful bottle or an almost good-enough-to-eat scent are all well and good. But according to new figures, most of the country simply wants a shampoo that works – as evidenced by the bestselling product in the UK.
According to fashion and lifestyle bible Who What Wear, the most popular shampoo in the UK is none other than Head & Shoulders’ Classic Clean, which retails for as little as £4.99.
Okay, so it might not be the most glamorous option on the shelves, but considering there’s at least a 50 per cent chance that you’ll experience symptoms of an itchy, flaky scalp at some point in your life, it’s easy to see why so many people reach for it on a regular basis.
The reason Head & Shoulders shampoo is so effective is because its active ingredient (antifungal piroctone olamine, science buffs) directly targets a yeast-like fungus called malassezia, which has been identified as the root cause of dandruff. This fungus creates oleic acid, which triggers irritation and rapid cell shedding.
But you don’t have to have dandruff to reap the benefits of Head & Shoulders – it’s a paraben, phosphate and paraffin-free formula that will leave anyone’s hair squeaky clean and shiny, with a reasonable price tag to boot.
Classic Clean may be the OG Head & Shoulders, but there’s also a number of different variations to choose from in the range, from colour protection to deep hydration. So even if you’re not buying the hero bottle, chances are you’ve tried a member of the H&S range at some point.
However, Head & Shoulders isn’t the only dandruff shampoo that flies off the shelves across the nation. The Body Shop’s £6.50 Ginger Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, which has received hundreds of 5-star reviews for its flake-fighting abilities, sells at the staggering rate of four per second.
