Looking for a budget staycation this year but not sure where to go? We may have the answer, as according to new research from holiday rental site HomeAway, the top destination for a purse-friendly UK break is the seaside town of Great Yarmouth.
The Norfolk seaside town came out top when the travel booking site looked at the most in-demand UK locations where British holidaymakers found the best value for money. A trip to Great Yarmouth will set you back an average nightly price of just £23 per person, which is 15 per cent less than last year.
Great Yarmouth has everything you could want from a British seaside – a long sandy beach dotted with brightly painted beach huts, family friendly entertainment by way of amusement parks and a pier and plenty of surrounding countryside for brisk walks to blow away the cobwebs.
Many also visit this coastal resort for its links to maritime history and its newly restored Venice-inspired boating lake. And of course, it’s obligatory that you have fish and chips on the beach while fending off hungry seagulls.
Other affordable UK destinations that made the list include Hayle in Cornwall, Heacham in Norfolk and also Hunstanton in – the average nightly price in these towns all come in under £35.
Staycations are definitely on the rise and are only set to become more popular as holidaymakers continue to look for affordable holidays – as well as those travellers looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
London came out as the overall top staycation spot, with an average price of £72 per person per night and Edinburgh came second at £52 for the average night’s stay. However neither city offers the budget-friendly nor quaint charm that Great Yarmouth or any other seaside town does.
And we Brits clearly love a coastal break, because picture-perfect Whitby came out as the third most popular UK-based destination in 2019, with an average price per night of £38 per person, followed by the Welsh harbour town of Tenby.
