They’ve been a mainstay of our holiday and poolside wardrobes for years, but 2020 has now seen the humble flip-flop entrench itself into the everyday wardrobes of the style set, too.
Thanks to lockdown and most people working from home since March (and still are), fashion gave way to comfort as we embraced leggings, sports bras and everything with an elasticated waistband. And it seems our footwear choices didn’t escape the trend for comfort either – Lyst reports a 53 per cent increase in searches for flip-flops since June, with Havaianas in particular up 89 per cent month-on-month.
With no bosses around to impress or colleagues to spy our unpainted toenails and callous-y feet, and Zoom calls giving view to just the top third or so of our body, flip-flops have become the shoe of choice for many of us. While flat sandals in general are having a bit of a moment, Selfridges’ accessories and shoes buying manager, Josie Gardner, told The Guardian that ‘flip-flops in particular have seen something of a resurgence as an alternative to the classic Birkenstock.’
Case in point: all the style influencers worth their salt on Instagram, including the effortlessly stylish Danish set at Copenhagen Fashion Week this week. They’re all sporting flip flops, whether that’s the classic rubber and plastic varieties relegated purely to the poolside until now or elevated luxe versions in leather or with chunky flatform soles.
