This iconic hit has been voted the best Christmas song of all time

A new survey has revealed the best Christmas song of all time according to the British public – and, to our surprise, it’s not sung by Mariah.

Fairytale of New York by the Pogues was crowned the greatest Christmas tune in the research, which was conducted by Magic Radio. The Pogues’ iconic song, featuring Kirsty MacColl, ranked above Ms Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You and Wham’s Last Christmas, as well as other classic festive hits.

The nation’s top 12 picks have now been awarded the title of Magic’s ’12 songs of Christmas’ – and if you’re in need of a playlist for a Christmas party, we could certainly think of worse places to start.

Also featured in the line-up are Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday by Wizzard and Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime.

A Magic Radio spokesperson said of the station’s findings: ‘When it comes to putting people in the Christmas spirit, music is king. And it’s no wonder that more people are turning to music to bring them festive cheer – it’s the ultimate escapism in another year of uncertain times and bad news.

‘With Christmas bringing loved ones together, there’s no better time to put music on and relax into that Christmassy feeling.’

December is now a mere 24 hours away, so you know the drill. Mistletoe and microphones at the ready…
