When was the last time you wore an anklet? If you answer is ‘the 90s’, colour us unsurprised – but according to recent stats, it might just be time to bring this somewhat retro trend back out of retirement.
According to demi-fine jewellery brand Missoma, sales of anklets are up 71 per cent since lockdown began, with the popularity of their delicate designs soaring as we all experience a very different, and for the most part, much slower pace of life. Other retailers like Edge of Ember have sold out of their anklet lines completely – and while there’s no clear-cut answer as to why, we do have several theories.
One, while clothes can be difficult to fit and a nightmare to return when shopping online, jewellery is easier to buy from afar, making it the perfect pick-me-up during these difficult times.
Anklets in particular are also an extra finishing touch to your at-home pedicure or fresh self tan – with beach holidays where you might previously have been tempted to loop on a chain a distant memories, we’re putting together more curated looks to sunbathe in the garden, or for our daily walk through the local park. A subtle glint of gold above your sandals could be the mood lifter you need if you’ve been struggling to feel put together, and a little more like your pre-quarantine self.
But whatever the psychology behind the resurgence, we’re here for it, and already browsing the new wave of anklets to add to our collections. Whether you style yours with cropped jeans, your favourite midi or summer shorts, it’ll soon become a regular part of your sartorial arsenal.
