The minute I set eyes on top facialist Joanna Vargas, it was obvious from her radiant complexion why the likes of Dakota Johnson, Helena Christensen and Maggie Gyllenhaal rely on her. Women actually book in to her clinics in LA and New York with the sole intent of getting her signature ‘Julianne Moore’ glow. So naturally, I asked what – aside from the fancy, high-tech machines she uses on clients – is her secret to getting great skin at home.
The answer was simple – facial massage. ‘The trick is to tailor your massage technique to your skin condition or the time of day,’ she says. ‘For dull and dry skin, massage in an upwards direction to create a lifting effect and increase circulation. If you have breakouts, move down and out to the edges of the face to encourage lymphatic drainage and reduce redness,’ says Joanna. If it’s on an even keel, massage upwards for a morning glow and downwards at night (especially around the eyes) to prevent puffiness building up while you sleep.
As for products, I find that a gel or oily-textured serum feels best. I’ve fallen in love with Joanna’s Rejuvenating Serum (£72, net-a-porter.com) for my nightly massage.
If the price seems like a stretch, La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Serum (£20, laroche-posay.co.uk) is also great. Either way, you can achieve smoother skin with an inside-out glow as seen on the Tibi S/S 18 catwalk. Fingertips at the ready…
This week we’re…
…throwing out the summertime make-up rulebook with Guerlain’s deliciously dark Kiss Kiss Lipstick in West Wood (£28, johnlewis.com). Wear it alone or pat it over lip balm for a more subtle, sheer finish. Either way, it’ll give your look more va-va-voom when the sun sets.
