The commissioning team at the BBC has been unstoppable lately, announcing one exciting new drama after the other. Just last week news broke of the broadcaster’s upcoming Dr Foster spin-off series which naturally had us all talking. And now, it has been confirmed that a new mystery thriller is in the works too.
Titled The Tourist, the new series has been written by Harry and Jack Williams, the creators of hit BBC show The Missing, which is promising in itself if you ask us. In short, it has been described as a ‘cat and mouse chase’ so expect to be on the edge of your seats throughout the six-part series.
Here’s everything we know so far…
The series is set in the Australian outback and follows a British man, who is attacked by a tank truck that tries to run him off a road. After a cat and mouse chase, the man later wakes up in hospital with complete memory loss and doesn’t even know who he is.
The BBC’s summary of the show reads: ‘The Tourist is a character-driven mystery packed thriller, full of shocking, surprising, funny and brutal turns. Set in a world populated by quirky, enigmatic characters, off-beat black comedy punctuates high-stakes action. The series takes twists and turns through the dusty outback of Australia, to the frantic noise and lights of Singapore, and to the calm, luxury white-sand beaches of Bali.’
Similarly, writers Harry and Jack Williams said: ‘The Tourist is a departure from anything we’ve written before. It isn’t an easy show to categorise – so we won’t. We are, however, hugely excited to have Chris Sweeney on board as director, and to be making this for the BBC. We’re thankful for their support of this ambitious project.’
Casting has yet to be announced.
The air date
No air date has been confirmed yet as filming hasn’t kicked off. However, it is set to begin later this year so we may have to wait until 2021 for the release.
