We didn’t think you could beat the deliciousness/cuteness combo of M&S’s Colin the Caterpillar – after all, the chocolatey caterpillar cake has been a popular mainstay of children’s and adult’s birthdays alike since his inception in 1990. In fact, so popular is Colin, that he’s spawned several copycat versions from other supermarkets (Waitrose’s Cecil, Asda’s Clyde and Tesco’s Curly, for example) over the years and M&S made Colins available for delivery during lockdown to meet demand.
However, has Asda cracked the code to rival Marks’s iconic caterpillar cake creation once and for all? We certainly think they might be on to something, with the launch of Sid the Sausage Dog.
Just like the caterpillar lends itself perfectly to the long, cylindrical shape of a Swiss roll, the classic elongated shape of a Dachshund is so perfect for this type of cake, we’re wondering how it hasn’t been thought of before now?
Perfect for pup-lovers with something to celebrate, the foot and a half long cake feeds up to 24 people and features a soft chocolate sponge rolled with chocolate buttercream, coated with milk chocolate and edible decorations, including the cutest little face with big puppy dog eyes and floppy ears.
Sid would make the ideal novelty centrepiece for birthday parties, or any celebration where you want to bring a smile to everyone’s faces. At £12, he’s pricier than his caterpillar counterpart, but when you can feed 24 mouths with one cake (depending on how big you like your slices!), Sid is one very good value pup.
Becky Price, Asda’s Product Development Manager for Cakes at Asda, commented: ‘We know our customers love a novelty cake that injects plenty of fun into special celebrations at an affordable price! We’ve seen a rising demand from our customers for sausage dog-themed products, so Sid is a great addition to our celebration cake range and is sure to become one popular pooch!’
Asda’s Sid the Sausage Dog cake will be available in Asda stores from today and online in the next few days – watch this space! Colin will always have a special place in our hearts, but we think we could make room for Sid, too.
