Here’s some cork-popping news – one of the best champagnes in the world will set you back just £11 a bottle. That is, according to the International Wine and Spirits Challenge, which has just awarded a silver outstanding medal to Aldi Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut.
The fizz, which sells for £10.99 at the bargain supermarket, is a consistent bestseller, and has won two other international awards already this year.
Sourced from champagne house Philizot & Fils, the blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier is aged in cellars to enhance its complexity – and this hard work certainly pays off in the flavour profile, which offers hints of soft red fruits and ripe apples with a floral overtone.
Aldi wine expert, Sam Caporn, said of the bottle’s latest win: ‘In my honest opinion, the Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut is one of the very best, if not THE best value champagne in the UK today.
‘It is staggering quality for such a reasonably priced, tasty sophisticated fizz.’
The champagne is available to buy from Aldi both in store and online, where already satisfied customers have left more than 500 5 star reviews.
‘One of the best champagnes I have ever tasted – I was sceptical, until we had a blind tasting session with 6 other champagnes,’ said one fan of the brut. ‘Bollinger came top – but this one was second. At one third of the price of Bolly it has now become our favourite for affordable “daily” drinking.’
‘I heard so much about this champagne that I thought I’d had to try it myself, and it definitely lives us to the hype,’ a second agreed. ‘Fresh, fruity, perfect drink for everyday drinking but also good enough for that special occasion. This champagne beats the ones which are twice as expensive, I can only recommend it.’
