Aldi’s KitchenAid-style mixer is back in time for Bake Off season

Whether you’re a seasoned pro when it comes to baking, or an enthusiastic cake-maker just finding their feet, there’s one item of kitchen equipment almost everyone has dreamed of owning at some point: a KitchenAid stand mixer.

The iconic tool comes in a range of rainbow colours and is known for its ability to whizz up any number of recipes in a matter of minutes, but it doesn’t come cheap. Prices start from £449 for a mini mixer, and go all the way up to £899 for a ‘professional’ version, leaving the machine out of reach for many home cooks.

However, if your budget is minimal but your Victoria sandwich ambitions still sky-high, don’t despair, because Aldi has a very affordable KitchenAid alternative with everything you need to bake up a storm.

The 4.5 litre Ambiano Classic Stand Mixer, which first launched last year, is back on the Aldi website priced at just £49.99, with a snazzy premium version for serious star bakers available at £99.99. The mixers do all of the same basic jobs as the pricer KitchenAid piece of tech, with interchangeable heads and variable speed settings to help you create a range of different batters and doughs.

Reviewers who’ve already picked one up are impressed with the quality, with one posting on the Aldi website: ‘I’ve just got home and used this to make a victoria sponge cake and it was fantastic. The mixer head rotates inside the bowl to make sure every part of the mixture gets mixed. It is very sturdy and comes with 3 attachments, all metal and very solid.’

‘It’s really easy to work, you just click the metal bowl into place and the mixer head and it works. It is also very easy to clean. Excellent for the price, almost as good as KitchenAid and 1/6 of the price!’

The only downside? There’s only two colours on offer, rather than KitchenAid’s usual 21 – but with a bold red and a neutral white, we can’t imagine many homes where these wouldn’t take pride of place. Now the only question is what to make first…
