How to prep your feet for summer

After the long winter months, nobody would blame you if your feet weren’t exactly sandal-ready. From cracked heels to old nail polish, when feet come out of hibernation, they usually aren’t pretty. However, there are simple steps you can follow to prep your feet for summer, and a small number of products that can aid in your foot recovery, including exfoliating files and nourishing creams.

Ghazaleh Rahimi, a Consultant Podiatrist who works with CeraVe, revealed his six steps to getting sandal-ready feet just in time for the super hot weather. These are as follows:

How to prep your feet for summer

STEP ONE: Removing hard skin

‘Before soaking the feet it’s important to remove any hard skin gently. Using a foot file gently rub the skin in a circular motion to go over areas where there is callus (hard skin). These areas usually include the heels or under the base of the toes, or on the side of the foot. The gentle circular motion will buff away dry skin and leave your feet with a smoother surface.’

STEP TWO: Soaking

‘Next, soak your feet for 5-10 minutes in lukewarm water with a soap of your choice. Do not soak your feet for longer than 10 minutes as this can cause further drying of the skin.’

STEP THREE: Clipping the nails

‘Now that your nails are slightly softer, using clippers, cut the nail back so that you are left with 1mm of white line and the nail edge meets the tip of your toe. Cut the nail straight without cutting into the corners. Be very gentle when clipping the nails. I suggest that you hold the base of the nail down with the other hand and gently clip, this will prevent any trauma radiating through the nail which could lead to thickening of your nail.’

STEP FOUR: Filing

‘File the top edge of your nails in one direction, ensuring that you are not following a backwards and forwards motion, as this will only cause fraying of the nail and splitting, as well as allowing water to weaken your nail structure.’

STEP FIVE: Buff

‘Take a nail buffer, and buff your hydrated nails gently until they shine. This should take five seconds on each nail, buff the edges of nails too, to seal the nails.’

STEP SIX: Moisturise

‘Apply moisturiser liberally over the feet (avoiding between the toes). Don’t forget to massage product into the heels, you can apply daily for optimal results and to support the skin barrier. Finally, place feet in moisturising socks and leave overnight.’

You’re now ready to paint your nails (if you’d like), and wear your sandals or heels all summer long!
